Wilmington Public Schools hosted its first ever Special Olympics on Thursday. Wow! What an event!
For years, Wilmington students have been competing at an event in Lawrence. But by hosting it right here in town, more kids all of ages were able to participate. (Students from Burlington also took part.)
Dozens of students ran track, practiced soccer and football skills and even did some shot put and long jump on the high school athletic fields. Just about everyone, from the athletes to the volunteers, parents and organizers had smiles on their faces. In addition to the athletes, there were also "buddies" on hand to help their peers and cheer them on. The high school band and cheerleaders chipped in as well.
Thanks to all those who worked to put it together. Add this event to what makes Wilmington so special.
WCTV had a still camera and video camera at the event.
You can see highlights on video soon. In the meantime, check out our Facebook page for an album with dozens of snapshots from the day.
