Winter Sports Update

We are in the middle of the winter sports season at Wilmington High School and you can now watch basketball and hockey games on our Education Channel (Comcast 99 / Verizon 39) and onlineOur sports team includes staff and volunteers, and they’ve covered a handful of games so far.  We’re looking to get some wrestling on soon.

Anyone who follows sports knows how important the play-by-play calls are.  And this winter, we’ve been fortunate to have a few new commentators sign up to call the games. Larry Gordon has done a pair of girls basketball games.  This past weekend Jay Barrett and Rob Irwin paired up for their first hockey game together, although both of them brought on-air aliases to the rink.  Also of note, Jim Boyle isn’t new to play-by-play, but this WCTV veteran has been back doing basketball games this year.

Play-by-play can be challenging, but also rewarding.  And if you know the rules of the game, your insight really enhances the product.  Interested in being a part of our sports team?  We don’t just need commentators, but camera operators are welcome as well.  Contact Adam Duenberry at adusenberry@wctv.org.  And if winter sports isn’t your thing, spring is right around the corner with baseball, softball and lacrosse!

We have a couple of station events coming up that are open to the public:

  • Monday, January 22 at 7PM: Learn about our field cameras and what goes into a field production, including sports. Contact Operations Manager Adam Dusenberry to RSVP and to learn more: adusenberry@wctv.org.
  • Wednesday, January 31st at 7PM: Our first Media Meet-Up of the year is on interviewing. We’ll be talking about interviewing on television and in the podcast studio. Contact Lisa Kapala at lkapala@wctv.org
